Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”  Genesis 18:12-14

Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. … Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”Genesis 21:2. 6-7

Reader’s Digest for years has reminded us that “Laughter is the Best Medicine” and dare I say that I have never met anyone who did not like to laugh. Some prefer slap stick comedy, others prefer a more cerebral form of comedy, and some enjoy a good play on words, while others love a good funny story. No matter what type of humor one prefers everyone seemingly loves a good belly laugh.

Most of us have laughed at a good joke or a funny story, but have you ever laughed when it comes to a promise of God? Have you felt lead by God to move in a particular situation only to chuckle at the complete absurdity of the situation? On the other hand when was the last time you truly laughed with joy over something marvelously wonderful God has done in your life? In our passage today we see a childless, senior citizen, nomadic woman laugh at the news that she will bear a son only to laugh with joy at the fulfillment of the promise. Take a moment to examine your life and enjoy the laughter that comes as you examine God’s provisions and promises kept in your life.
